Children's Technology Classes

The Children's Department offers technology classes on a variety of different topics.
They are offered in rotation, so please see this month's calendar for upcoming technology classes.
Most technology classes take place September to May. If there are classes you wish to see offered, please let us know.

  • (1) hour class that teaches the fundamentals of speed typing.
  • Correct posture and position as well as the home row are taught.
  • Children may learn the rest of the keyboard using one of a variety of websites (Suggestions are provided at the end of class).
  • Intro to Typing is an introduction, not a comprehensive typing course.
A+ Excel

  • (1) hour class that teaches fundamentals of Microsoft Office Excel
  • Uses classroom skills to teach Excel
  • Teaches Rows, Columns, cells, and spreadsheet navigation

  • (1) hour class that teaches how Microsoft Office Excel can create charts and graphs
  • Teaches fundamentals of spreadsheets and data entry
  • Teaches setting up data points for graphs and charts
  • It's great if the children know what the parts of a graph are, but not essential
Excel Shopping Spree
  • Ages 9 to 12
  • (1) hour class that teaches the SUM function in Microsoft Office Excel
  • We use an imaginary toy shopping spree to teach Excel
  • Children learn spreadsheet basics and set up a budget in Excel. Then they choose toys that will exactly total $1000.  The student closest to the exact amount wins the challenge.  If there is time, we talk about calculating sales tax and how that affects our totals.
Introduction to Word
  • Ages 9 to 12 - (A version of this class may soon be offered for younger children)
  • (1) hour class that teaches the basics of Microsoft Office Word
  • Learn the Word environment, formatting and laying out text, and learn a few tips to make reports easier.
Introduction to Publisher
  • Ages 9 to 12

  • We use projects to teach different aspects of Publisher.
  • Start with a blank page, and create text boxes, picture boxes, and word art. Learn about formatting, layout, object positioning, and graphic design.
  • Then move to a project (Menus, Party Invitations, Holiday Cards, etc.) and the children have complete artistic freedom to modify the project with the skills they have just learned.
  • This class is challenging, so the expectation is that children know how to use a mouse with some dexterity and have some familiarity with fonts.
Book Trailers
  • Ages 9 to 12
  • (1) hour class that teaches how to make mini-movies about books - called book trailers (think movie trailers about books ) using free websites.
  • Add pictures, text, and music into the book trailer and talk about transitions.
  • Discuss copyright and intellectual freedom on the internet.
  • This is a popular class in which children are able to be very creative.
