Therapy Dogs International Evaluator Dona Campbell and her dog Hana

The Trap Falls Kennel Club of Fairfield County, Connecticut, will be at the Stratford Library on Saturday, January 28 at 2:00 p.m. to present "Doggie Dos and Don'ts."

Children ages 5 and up and their grown-ups (but not your pets!) are invited to learn about Dog Ownership and Training. Discover how to communicate with dogs and how to encourage proper behavior. Certified Therapy Dogs will demonstrate Obedience and Rally techniques. To register, please call the Stratford Library at 203.385.4165.

Trap Falls Kennel Club (TFKC) is a certified all-breed dog club and a member club of the American Kennel Club, located in Upper Fairfield County, Connecticut. TFKC sponsors an annual all-breed point show, and Obedience, Rally, and Agility Trials. TFKC also participates in public education, library READ programs (Reading Education Assistance Dogs), and hosts training classes to start your puppy off on the right paw.

We Love Art Group Predicts Children's Book Winners

The We Love Art Children's Book Group has chosen their picks for this year's Caldecott Award, an award for excellence in children's illustrations. Their top choices are:

Tied for first place: Mouse and Lion by Rand Burkert and Nancy Ekholm Burkert and Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick

What the Children Had to Say:

Wonderstruck is awesome. The charcoal and pencil illustrations are in black and white, but it's 'still interesting.' The changing perspective shows us the story close up and far away. They all wanted to check it out and read the entire story.

Mouse and Lion looks like colored pencil, but it's watercolor. It is so detailed and fine. The colors are calm, except when the lion and the mice are moving. We really like the color palette and the fine detail.

Caldecott Honor Choice: Me...Jane by Patrick McDonnell

What the Children Had to Say: This story is watercolor with india ink and antique engravings. We love the photograph of the real Jane Goodall at the end and we love that her childhood dream came true when she was an adult and she visited Africa. The colors are bold and bright and the illustrations are in a cartoon style. The numerous, pale engravings are interesting to look at.

Tree Lighting Events

Stratford’s Holiday Festival is on Wednesday, November 30 in Stratford Downtown and one week later on December 6^th in Paradise Green. The Downtown Event, which will begin at 5:30 (there will be a puppet show for children at the Library at 4:30), will be in front of Milford Bank where we will light the tree at 6:15, and the Paradise Green event will begin at 6:00 pm. Dance Video Workshop

The Children's Department will be having a Dance Video workshop on Monday, October 10 (Columbus Day) from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Ages 8 to 12. We've decided to be really brave and 'attempt' to learn the dance from 'Thriller' in honor of the spooky nature of October. Woke up very excited this morning that the power was back on at work and we could be here with doors open and smiles to welcome Hurricane Irene survivors (do you have the t-shirt yet?!). So we're open, and come on down and enjoy our electricity if yours is out or if you just need to get out of the house. And for those kids who are missing school, I put out coloring pages and worksheets for those Lisa Simpsons in the town!

P.S. I won't tell you about Tropical Storm Katia, formed in the same place H. Irene was!

First Teen Volunteer Orientation this Saturday

The Children's Department is seeking responsible teens grades 8 to 12 who wish to help with this year's summer reading program. Interested teens should plan to attend one of the orientation sessions. At orientation, teens will learn about scheduling, summer reading, and other aspects of the program.

Decorative Arts Makes Birdhouses

Well, we had a rousing Toddler Time this morning to start off vacation week (even though the school children aren't out until tomorrow), so a few announcements:
- Tuesday - no storytime - storytime resumes April 26
- Wednesday - Spring Crafts ages 3 to 12; 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Pajamarama storytime at 6:30 p.m.
- Thursday - Spring Crafts ages 3 to 12; 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Movie Making (which is pretty much full) from 1 to 4 p.m.
Friday - Library Closed
Saturday - we're open!
Sunday - Library Closed

Save Our Stratford Library

The proposed budget for Stratford Library for 2011-2012 includes drastic cuts to the Library's budget. This will result in:

Library closures on Sundays, Saturdays, weekdays, and evenings
Cancellations for programs for ALL ages including Story Hours, Summer Reading, and Homework help
Fewer books, DVDs, audiobooks, and databases
A reduction of 20% in library staffing

Please help us serve you. Share a brief note or conversation with your council person. Tell them what you love about the Library and why we are important to you.

Opportunities to address Town Council include:

Wednesday, April 13, 6:30 p.m. Bunnell High School

Moms over Coffee this Friday

Big Nate

This series, Big Nate, seems to be the next 'big thing,' so some extra copies have just entered the building (Look for them soon, on a shelf near you!). Some of them are comic books, and some of them are hybrids, which means a chapter book with doodles or comics interspersed.

It's based on a comic strip that has been around for a while, and it follows a middle schooler as he does his everyday-kid type stuff, including, surprise, surprise, doodling! I have a big feeling that fans of Wimpy Kid won't mind at all reading this series.

Therapy Dog Facts!

Our therapy dogs, Siena & Drago will be here at the Library this Thursday from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, March 16 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. Children of all ages can sign up to read to them by calling the Library at 203.385.4165.

I was trying to describe Siena and Drago, so I went to the Kennel Club website for a few facts about Spinone Italiano, which is their breed.
- They're hunting dogs (which we knew because they went hunting in the upper North west this fall!)
- Their heavy coat makes it easy for them to handle underbrush and cold swims
- They are friendly and quiet (which, if you have ever met Siena & Drago, you know is true)

No Pajamarama Tonight

The Stratford Library Children's Department's evening storytime, Pajamarama, is canceled for tonight, February 2nd. I heard on television that we should only have 2 more weeks of real winter. Well, it sounds nice, but I'll believe it when I see it!

New Playaways!

The librarians did a dance around the room yesterday because the new Playaways are in! Here is the juicy list in no particular order! Oh, I forgot. In case you do not know what a Playaway is, it's an MP3 player with an entire book on it for you to listen to. You just plug your headphones in, hit the play button, and away you go! We're very excited to have World Book Encyclopedia online for our patrons. You can see the link to World Book from our Resources page. All you need to access it from your home or laptop is your Stratford Library card.

And for our young patrons, we're equally excited to have Tumblebooks which is an interactive Storybook site where children can listen to wonderful stories and even read along. You can access Tumblebooks from our Downloadable Media page. Tumblebooks also uses your Stratford Library card to enter the site.

South End Community Center Coat Drive - Library Drop Off Spot

Spread a little warmth this December! The South End Community Center is collecting clean, gently used toddler and children's winter coats in sizes 3T to 12. The Stratford Library Children's Department is a drop off point for donations, so feel free to stop by anytime with coats.

One of our librarians has been scouring the shelves for books about coats, so here is one of our favorites. Thanks for your help!

Celebrate the December Holidays Magic Show

What better way to welcome the cold month of December but with some December holiday magic? Join magician Debbie O'Carroll for a family afternoon of stage magic, lively dance, and enchanting holiday lore celebrating all the holidays of December. The show will be Wednesday, December 1 at 4:00 p.m. in the Library's Lovell Room and is suitable for ages 3 and up. Stroller parking will be provided in an area of the library for everyone's convenience and safety. Call us to register at 203.385.4165.

Afterwards, head on over to the West Broad Green to enjoy caroling, hot chocolate, and the annual lighting of Stratford's Christmas tree.

Is Your Family Safe at Home? Lead Prevention Day Tomorrow

Just a quick reminder that the Bridgeport Department of Health will be visiting us tomorrow, Tuesday October 26 from 11-6 to address the issue of lead poisoning in children. Here are some facts that I learned; stop by tomorrow and learn some facts of your own!

- 80% of Stratford homes contain lead, primarily in windows pre-1977
- A new law requires windows in pre-1977 homes to be replaced by EPA approved contractors
- Lead poisoning can cause developmental delays in children
- Toys can also contain lead or cadmium

Displays around the Library

On Friday, we installed 3 new displays in the Children's Department. Unfortunately, only 2 of my pictures came out, so here is the evidence! We have an Alice in Wonderland board up for our Barnes & Noble fundraiser beginning Friday, November 19 and continuing through November 24, 2010. Purchases made in Barnes & Noble of Milford or online will help support the Library. More details available at the Library.

The second display is an intricate one starring Russian dolls and artifacts. It's fascinating to spend a few minutes looking at them all. Some were donated by staff members; others by Eugenia Cody of the Perry House. Hope you can stop in Saturday, October 23 at 10:30 to enjoy Russian stories in English for children ages 6 to 12. A few odds and ends for this week.
1. Storytime schedule for this week can be found on our calendar page. This week's storytime theme for Tues/Wed is Harvest Home.

2. Saturday is quite a busy day with 3 programs: At 10:30 there is Sensory Storytime for children with sensory needs. At 1:00 p.m. there is Russian cartoons including Beauty and the Beast in Russian. At 2:30 there will be an Embroidery Class for children ages 7 to 12 ($5 material fee due by Thursday). Register by calling 203.385.4165.

3. The Science Fiction Assignment has begun. We have lists in the Library for ideas, but if you're online, try Here or Here for some possibilities.

Origami is our first Decorative Arts Class

If you've visited the Children's Department before, you probably know we have a few tremendous artists (sadly, not me!). So, you can imagine that we are very happy to offer a new program called Decorative Arts. Each month we'll feature a different type of decorative art that children can learn. September, we're featuring Origami thanks to the wonderful Japan Society of Fairfield who are making a return appearance due to popular demand. This Saturday, September 11, children 7 to 12 can join us for origami at 2:30 p.m. Register by calling 203.385.4165 or email children@stratfordlibrary.org.

In case you're curious, the other fall Decorative Arts programs will be:

Summer Reading Wrap Up

All the librarians in the Children's Department would like to congratulate our summer readers. We are so proud of all of you for reading, setting goals, and working hard to accomplish them. We know you will return to school smart and ready to go.

So, how did we do? Here are some fun facts from summer reading.
- 1104 children participated. That's about 200 more kids than last year, which was our record high. Wow!
- 8800+ books were read. I'm trying to picture a stack of books that high, and I just can't!
- 7600+ activities were completed. That's a ton of reading done by parents and siblings, not to mention rhymes, songs, and other activities.
- 4500 raffle tickets were given out. The fashion bag had the most entries.
- 1400 free books were given away to children.
- Next year's theme will be One World, Many Stories. We're already planning raffle bags from every continent! If you have any coins from a foreign country we'd love to include them in next year's bags.

Summer Reading Parties

Congratulations to the over 1100 children who participated in Summer Reading. If you're coming to one of the parties this week, here's what you should know:

Read to Me Party has been moved to Christ Church at 2000 Main Street. You may park at the Library or on Academy Hill. You will need a ticket to be admitted.

Summer Reading Party is at the Baldwin Center. This party is completely full, so only children with tickets and their grown ups will be admitted. Please make other arrangements for siblings. You may park at the Library; the Baldwin center is the building next to the Library (we share a parking lot).

We're so proud of all of you for your reading accomplishments. Every day you made us laugh or taught us something. So thank you to everyone who participated, and here's to another great year!
